Wondering what the adorable pup is wearing on his head, Mutt Muffs! Yes, this Lab mix, Cooper, is flying in a plane wearing muffs to protect his ears. If you’ve ever flown in those small planes, you know the noise is really loud. Well, a dog’s hearing is more sensitive than a humans so you can imagine how loud it is on a plane for a pooch. Cooper used to curl up in a ball while he went on a sky ride, but with the Mutt Muffs he enjoys being in the air and looks out the window.

Brian’s first two years were very traumatic. His first owners abused him. The foster home he was in the person didn’t show him love, but stabbed him several times. With this introduction to the world, Jeannie Ranalli from the New Haven Animal Shelter worked on Brian’s trust issues. All her work paid off and now Brian is a loyal, lovable and devoted canine companion.

This beautiful, white Pit Bull mix loves to play fetch. Toss a tennis ball and Brian will love to fetch it rather than eat! Bubbles, a beautiful six year old pup, needs a home. Her life has been traumatic and after giving birth to puppies her owner threatened to kill her along with her babies. After Adopt-A-Pet saved her from her sadistic owner, they found out she was suffering from an infected leg injury and very sick.

All of Bubbles’ puppies have found homes, but momma is awaiting adoption as she is being fostered. Bubbles has recovered from her injuries due to being neglected. She has been spayed and vaccinated. A three year old German Shepherd was taken to the emergency animal hospital in Garden Grove. The poor, starved pup was a mere 37 pounds, which was half the normal weight a dog his size should be. His owner Kimberly Nizato was arrested for starving the shepherd and the pup had resorted to eating dirt to survive.

The German Shepherd has been recovering well and now weighs 41 pounds. There is still the concern of whether the dog will recover from the damage that was done to his liver and kidneys due to the advanced malnutrition.

A bag of dog food costs less than $20. If Nizato couldn’t care for her dog properly, she should have done the responsible thing and found a different home for him.

Email, an underground railroad and volunteers, who love dogs, are saving many lives. Open Arms Pound Rescue have been transporting 15 dogs per week from shelters where they are scheduled for euthanasia to freedom! The route volunteers, like Bill Bretz, drive are almost the same as the “underground railroad” routes. Almost every weekend, Bretz drives 100 miles from Cincinnati to Columbus saving many pups from death!

This is the way to use star power! Kellan Lutz has joined PETA to encourage Twilight fans to rescue a shelter dog rather than buy a purebred pup from a pet store. Lutz is pictured here with his rescued mutt, Kola, who was a frightened canine just waiting for someone to save her from a California animal shelter.

Shelter staff discouraged Lutz from picking Kola as a pet because they claimed she pulled on her leash and therefore not a good pet candidate. Lutz didn’t care. He saw something in the depressed pup’s face that drew him to her. After Kola was taken out of her cage, she gave Lutz a canine hug (putting her head between his legs), and he was convinced that she was the furry companion for him.

PETA stated that there are over 8 million dogs and cats that find themselves in animal shelters every year. Half of these animals get euthanized due to lack of space. Lutz saved one of these animals that face possible death, and he now has a furever best friend!

In Lutz’ PETA campaign, his words to Twilight fans was ”For the fans of Twilight who have so much love for the books, these characters give that love to a pet if you don’t have one… Twilighters if you can, do adopt a pet!”

Are you looking for furry companionship? Zak and Lexi, two Chows, who have lived their whole lives together, are looking for a home. They have been living at the Indianapolis Humane Society for nearly six months. Dogs form bonds just like humans. The Indianapolis Humane Society understands this by offering a low fee of $80 for Zak and Lexi to be adopted together.

Go Orange this month! Show your support for the prevention of cruelty to animals. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has an annual event in April to get the word out and rally support around stopping animal abuse. You can use your imagination and be creative in how you want to GO ORANGE! Enter the ASPCA Go Orange contest and win a very special prize pack. The winner will be featured on the ASPCA website. Two-legged subjects can take a picture of themselves decorated in a creative orange creation and enter the contest, too.

The ASPCA was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh, who believed animals should be treated with kind and respectful treatment. Bergh believed laws should be created to protect our four-legged friends. They were the first humane organization, who was granted legal authority to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals. Programs available at the ASPCA are a poison control center, animal behavior program, animal hospital, mobile spay/neuter clinics and pet loss support services.
